GREENSBORO, NC – John Queeley’s goal from just inside the right side of the box with 1:36 to play before intermission was the only tally of the night as North Carolina State came away with a 1-0 win over UNC Greensboro in men’s soccer exhibition action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
Queeley scored off a feed from El Hadj Cisse to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead at the 43:24 mark. UNCG, despite dominating the second half with an 11-0 advantage in shots, could not get the equalizer. North Carolina State’s Aaron Sanders came on in the second half to record seven saves for the Wolfpack to preserve the win. Sanders’ best save of the night came with 11:52 to play on a shot by Michael FitzGerald. FitzGerald hit a blast from 20 yards out, on which Sanders dove hard to his left to make the save.
North Carolina State opens the season at Old Dominion next Thursday night at 7 pm.
The Spartans, ranked as high as sixth in the national pre-season polls, open the 2005 season at home next Thursday night against in-state rival UNC Wilmington, the team that knocked UNCG out of its No. 1 national ranking last season. The match gets underway at 7 pm at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
