Men's Golf Moves Up To Third After Day Two Of Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team posted the fourth lowest team score of the day in a difficult round Monday on the second day of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Spartans posted a 311 on the day two to move up into a tie for third place overall with Ball State at 603 (292-311), playing one of the most challenging courses in the country, Pinehurst No. 2.

The famed Pinehurst No. 2 course has hosted major championships and will be the home of the 2014 U.S. Open Championship and the 2014 Women's U.S. Open Championship. The Spartans' 311 is the fourth lowest score of the afternoon on the 7,400-yard course that played at only a par 70. The 311 score was just three shots off the lowest pace for the day, trailing just VCU which tallied a 308.

UNCG enters the final round of play Tuesday just four shots off the overall lead, trailing Old Dominion and VCU, while sitting in a tie with Ball State. The final round of the tournament will switch back to the Pinehurst No. 6 course, which the teams played in round one Sunday when UNCG notched a season-low 292.

Freshman Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) maintained his second place standing in the individual rankings after posting a 6-over par 76, which was the third lowest round of the day on the difficult course. Coalson boasts a 4-over par 145 and trails Ball State's Tyler Merkel by two shots with 18 holes to play. Merkel recorded the top score of the afternoon with a 3-over par 73 to move up three spots from fourth overall.

Sophomore Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) improved his standing 12 spots, moving into a tie for seventh overall as he also tallied a 6-over par 76, the third lowest round of the day. Dixon posted three birdies on the afternoon while also notching three bogeys and a double bogey on hole No. 18.

Sophomore Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) sits in a tie for 18th overall after carding an 8-over par 78 on day two. Ehlert has a 152 overall through 36 holes, as he tallied two birdies on the first nine holes.

Seniors Robert Hoadley (Southern Pines, N.C./Union Pines) and Matt Younts (Stokesdale, N.C./Northwest Guilford) rounded out the Spartans in the lineup as they are tied for 46th overall with scores of 158

Freshman Wilson Brown (Statesville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) owns a 169 (77-92) to sit in a tie for 50th place while classmate Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) has a 158 (77-81) as individuals.
