PINEHURST, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf freshman Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) sits alone in second place after day one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Sunday, helping the Spartans sit in fifth place overall in the team standings after 18 holes of play on Pinehurst's No. 6 course at the Pinehurst Resort. Round two will be played Monday on the famed No. 2 course has hosted major championships with tee times between 8:54-9:30 a.m.
Coalson fired a 2-under par 69 to sit just one shot out of the lead held by Nathan Kerns of Marshall at 3-under par 68. Coalson posted five birdies on the day, including four on the back nine, to overcome a bogey and a double bogey. His play helped the Spartans post a 9-over par 293, placing fifth overall seven shots off the lead held by Old Dominion (286). The 293 team score is the lowest of the year for UNCG, one shot better than a 294 it shot in the second round of the VCU Shootout (Sept. 24).
Sophomore Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) is tied for 19th overall after carding a 2-over par 73, with three birdies on the front nine. Classmate Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) is just one shot back in a tie for 28th overall with a 3-over par 74. He started the day with two birdies in the first nine holes, but dropped five strokes from holes No. 10-13 before finishing with five straight pars.
Seniors Robert Hoadley (Southern Pines, N.C./Union Pines) and Matt Younts (Stokesdale, N.C./Northwest Guilford) rounded out the Spartans in the lineup with scores of 5-over par 76 and six-over par 77, respectively.
Freshman Wilson Brown (Statesville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) posted a 5-over par 76 to sit in a tie for 50th place while classmate Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) carded a 6-over par 77 as individuals.
