Spartans finish strong at VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. — After enduring an up-and-down day on Monday, UNCG men's golf team finished strong on Tuesday at the VCU Shootout, using a 2-under par 286 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh at Hermitage Country Club.

During Monday's two rounds of action, the Spartans followed the tournament's best morning round (280) with second round's worst score (297), falling from a tie for first to ninth. But Tuesday's effort helped the Spartans complete tournament play with an overall score of 1-under 863 (280-297-286), tying with Charlotte and Richmond. UNCG finished ahead of Maryland, North Carolina, VCU, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and James Madison.

Virginia won the overall team championship by shooting 837. The Cavaliers were followed by East Carolina (844), Wichita State (852), Iowa State (854), Virginia Tech (855) and Wake Forest (856).

Colin Chapman was UNCG's top finisher, shooting 3-under par 213 (71-72-70) to finish 16th overall. Iowa State's Scott Fernandez (-11) won individual medalist honors.

Freshman Alex Ehlert finished in a tie for 27th after shooting 217 (70-77-70) for the tournament, while Andy Knox's 71 on Tuesday left him in a tie for 33rd at 218 (71-76-71).

Freshman Roy Dixon tied for 47th overall at 220 (68-73-79), while Robert Hoadley finished 67th (73-76-75).

Playing as individuals, Alex Simmons finished tied for 47th at 220 (70-74-76), and Matt Younts finished 90th at 247 (83-83-81).

Up next for the Spartans is the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, Oct. 3-4 at Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C.
