Men’s Golf opens fall season Monday at VCU Shootout

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG men's golf squad opens the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule at the VCU Shootout, Sept. 26-27 at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The 15-team tournament features 54 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.

UNCG Notes: Head coach Terrence Stewart begins his 11th season at UNCG the 2011-12 Spartans feature a veteran roster, including seniors Will Almand, Colin Chapman and Kyle Sonday along with juniors Robert Hoadley and Matt Younts … sophomores Andy Knox and Alex Simmons also return, while freshmen Roy Dixon and Alex Ehlert round out the roster … UNCG finished the 2011 Southern Conference runner up, its best finish in SoCon play … Almand and Sonday finished in the top 10 at the SoCon Championships, while Sonday and Robert Hoadley earned All-SoCon honors and Knox was named All-Freshman.

Tournament Notes: Nine of the 15 teams at the VCU Shootout ranked in the Golfstat.com Top 100 last year, including Virginia (22), Wake Forest (32) and Virginia Tech (37) … UNCG ranked 83rd … the Spartans finished fifth in last year's event, finishing nine strokes behind team champion UNC Wilmington … Robert Hoadley finished second overall at -7 (209).
