GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG golf standout Nathan Stamey shot a 65 on Monday at Forest Oaks Country Club to win the Wyndham Championship Event Qualifying and earn a spot in this week's PGA Wyndham Championship.
The top four finishers on Monday qualified for the Wyndham, which runs Thursday through Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Stamey, a first-team All-Southern Conference selection as a senior in 2008, qualified for his first PGA Tournament.
Starting on the 10th tee, Stamey set a blistering pace by shooting 3-under over the first four holes. After a bogey on No. 14 brought him back to 2-under, Stamey closed out his first nine holes with four consecutive birdies, making the turn at 6-under par.
Stamey continued his strong play on the front nine. Birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 dropped his score to 8-under before a bogey on eight brought him back to 7-under. He finished his day with a par on number nine.
Stamey won by two strokes over a trio of competitors. Nyasha Mauchaza, Darron Stiles and Savio Nazareth all shot 5-under par 67 to earn a spot in this weekend's field.
