GREENSBORO, N.C. – Robert Hoadley suffered a narrow defeat in the Round of 16 at the 86th Annual Public Links Championship, ending the rising junior's impressive run Thursday at Bandon Dunes Golf Course in Bandon, Ore.
Andrew Vijarro edged Hoadley 2 & 1 in the second match of the day for both golfers. Vijarro is a rising senior at Oregon.
Vijarro gained an early edge by winning the opening hole and took a two-hole advantage by winning No. 5. But Hoadley squared the match by winning Nos. 6 and 7.
Vijarro's par at No. 9 helped him regain the lead, and wins on 11 and 13 gave him a 3 up lead with five holes left. Hoadley twice pulled to within two holes, the last coming with a birdie on 16. But with Hoadley needing wins on the final two holes to force an extension of the match, the players tied on 17 to get Vijarro the win.
Hoadley's day began with an easy win in the Round of 32, cruising to a 6 & 4 victory over Kevin Lee of Cerritos, Calif.
Much like in his win over Jed Dirksen on Wednesday Hoadley took control early against Lee, winning the first three holes and five of the first seven. Hoadley owned a 4 up lead at the turn, and put Lee away for good with wins on Nos. 11 and 14.
