Spartans seventh at Irish Creek; play suspended in second round

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Colin Chapman and Will Almand shot 1-over-par 73s and the UNCG men's golf team stood in the middle of the pack in the 13-team Irish Creek Collegiate as play was suspended on Saturday night. The competitors will resume the second round on Sunday morning and will play another 18 holes to conclude the event.

The Spartans shot a collective 294 in the first round, and they were seventh when the combination of rain and darkness forced cessation of play at the Club at Irish Creek. Wake Forest and Duke own a considerable lead over the rest of the field; the Spartans were competitive with a group that included Charlotte, Kennesaw State, North Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Middle Tennessee State, all of which are ranked ahead of UNCG in the most recent national ratings by golfstat.com.

The balanced Spartan effort in the first round included 74s from Robert Hoadley and Kyle Sonday.

Chapman, who was listed as the Spartans' No. 5 player last month, continued a run of solid play. He tied for fifth in the BancorpSouth event in Madison, Miss., which ended Tuesday, and has broken par in at least one round in each of the past three events. That's the longest active streak on the team.
