MADISON, Miss. – Colin Chapman fired a 1-under-par 71 and a balanced UNCG men's golf team stands in a fifth-place tie in the weather-shortened BancorpSouth Intercollegiate.
The 15 teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and 18 Tuesday, but severe weather wiped out the planned third round. The participants are near the midpoint of the second – and ultimately final – round at Reunion Golf and Country Club.
Tornadoes struck all around the deep South on Monday and compelled organizers to alter the schedule. UNCG coach Terrance Stewart said he didn't see funnel clouds, but at least one tornado was spotted about 30 miles from the course. Sheriff's deputies said search-and-rescue teams were in operation as of Monday night near Braxton, Miss., and other locations.
The teams' progress in the second round is not yet official and will not be recorded until play concludes.
In the first 18 holes, Andy Knox and Robert Hoadley supplemented Chapman's effort with 1-over-par 73s and Kyle Sonday shot a 74. The Spartans' total of 291 is seven shots behind Southeastern Louisiana.
The No. 82 Spartans currently lead three teams rated ahead above them in the golfstat.com national rankings: No. 39 Middle Tennessee State, No. 69 Memphis and No. 72 Vanderbilt.
