Spartans finish fourth at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Kyle Sonday's 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday was UNCG's best round of the final day of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, in which the Spartans finished fourth of 24 teams after beginning the day in second place.

Colin Chapman, one of three Spartans to shoot 71 in Monday's first round, led the team for the tournament with a two-day total of 147.

Sonday, who redshirted last season, has put together solid tournaments in succession and is playing his best golf of his college career. Before this month, he hadn't finished above 22nd place in any of his 11 starts as a Spartan, but he worked his way into the lineup and tied for eighth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate from March 11-13. He followed that up by tying for 30th at this week's event, UNCG's first 36-hole tourney of 2010-11, with a 4-over-par 148.

He was joined at 148 by teammates Robert Hoadley and Will Almand.

Ryan Vince of James Madison won the individual title in a three-man playoff.

Overall, the Spartans played the 6,659-yard Woods Course at Kingsmill Resort in 10-over-par 298 on Tuesday after beginning the event with a collective 287 on Monday. They finished 13 shots back of champion James Madison, the only team to finish under par.

Although they fell short of the 17th team title in the program's Division I history, the Spartans finished in the top one-third of the field for the second consecutive event. They have been in the top half in five of their nine tournaments of 2010-11.

UNCG coach Terrance Stewart did not attend the tournament. He remained home to celebrate the birth of his second child, Thomas Day Stewart, who arrived Friday. The team was directed this week by its assistant coach, Dr. Bob Christina.
