RICHMOND, Va. – Robert Hoadley shot a final round 68 on Tuesday to finish second at seven-under par 209 to lead UNCG to a fifth-place finish at the Verizon Wireless VCU Shootout.
The Spartans shot 288 as a team on Tuesday to finish at 871, nine shots behind team champion UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks squandered a seven-shot lead, but held on for a one-shot win over Wake Forest. East Carolina was third, six shots back, followed by Richmond and UNCG.
Iowa State's Nate McCoy shot a final round 71 to claim the one shot victory over Hoadley. McCoy, who started at No. 8 in the shotgun format, birdied hole Nos. 3, 4, and 5 to get back to one-under for the day. Hoadley, who started on No. 4, meanwhile was keeping pace with birdies at Nos 18 and 1 to go to four-under on the day. However, the sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C. made par at the par-5 No. 2 and again on No. 3 and it wasn't quite enough to catch McCoy.
