UNCG breaks into Top 25 in Sagarin, opens play at VCU Shootout on Monday
MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - On the heels of receiving a Top 25 ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, the UNCG men's golf team will play its second event of the year beginning Monday at Hermitage Country Club for the VCU Shootout.
The Spartans are ranked No. 23 in the Sagarin ratings as of Sunday morning, with their slate rated fifth-toughest in the country thus far. UNCG opened the season at the Gopher Invitational, finishing eighth out of 11 teams.
LSU is ranked No. 1, followed by Florida, Kent State, Oklahoma State and Pepperdine. SoCon rival College of Charleston is ranked No. 24, with the next closest SoCon school being Davidson at No. 65.
The VCU shootout will feature 14 teams with 36 holes being played Monday and 18 on Tuesday. UNCG joins Charlotte, East Carolina, Iowa State, James Madison, Liberty, Mercer, UNCG, Old Dominion, Richmond, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Wichita State and tournament host VCU in the field. Charlotte is eighth in the Sagarin ratings as of Sunday morning, while Wake Forest is No. 34 and UNC Wilmington is No. 38.
