SOUTH BEND, Ind. – UNC Greensboro junior Drew Younts carded a round of 70 on Monday afternoon, shaving seven shots off his morning score, to sit six shots off the lead after two rounds at the Notre Dame Gridiron Classic.
Younts, a junior from Stokesdale, NC, started off shaky and got better as the day went on. Starting on No. 12 in the shotgun set-up, he bogeyed three of his first four holes in the opening round to get off slowly. However, in the afternoon round, Younts shot an even-par 70, and could have been under par had it not been for bogeys on his last two holes of the day. He is tied for 17th at 147 after 36 holes.
The Spartans are tied for 13th after two rounds at 605, carding team scores of 301 and 304 on Monday. Minnesota leads the team standings at 579, one shot better than Arkansas and four shots ahead of Michigan State and Virginia.
Michigan State’s Randy Hutchison, Virginia’s Kyle Stough and Andrew Landry of Arkansas are in a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard. They all sit at one-over par 141. Four more golfers sit two shots back in a tie for fourth, while 24 golfers – including Younts – are within six shots of the lead heading into Tuesday’s final round. Several of those players had wide variations between their two rounds on Monday, which could make for an interesting final round on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s tee times begin at 8:20 am off Nos. 1 and 10. The Spartans will go off of No. 10 beginning with the 8:57 am group.
