Balanced day gives UNCG 298 on first day of Mason Rudolf

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – UNC Greensboro used a balanced scoring day Friday to shoot a team score of 298 and sit in 14th place after the opening round at the Mason Rudolf Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Will Bowman shot an opening round 74 for UNCG on Friday.
 
Darragh Coughlan and Will Bowman each carded rounds of 74, while Kyle Sonday, Drew Youngs and Will Almand each shot 75 on the opening day of the tournament.

South Carolina sits atop the team leaderboard, shooting 281 to hold a two-shot lead over tourney host Vanderbilt. Western Carolina’s Caleb Marsh and Arkansas State’s Tyler Thompson share the lead after the opening round scores of 66 for each of them.

Coughlan was five over through 11 holes, but pulled it together to record five pars and two birdies the rest of the way. Bowman, on the other hand, had a solid front nine with eight pars and a bogey, but had a roller coaster on the backside. After going bogey, birdie, par to start the back nine, Bowman recorded consecutive bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14, consective pars on Nos. 15 and before a bogey on No. 17 and birdie on No. 18.

Play resumes Sunday with second round tee times starting at 8:05 am local time. UNCG’s groups begin play at 8:50 am.
