POWELS POINT, N.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Kyle Sonday and Will Almand tied for low score by an amateur and finished 11th at this week’s 45th Pepsi North Carolina Open, hosted by Kilmaric Golf Club.
A pair of Cary, N.C. natives, both finished the 54-hole event at five-under par 211. Former NC State golfer Steve Island won the title with a 201, five shots ahead of Rick Morton and Bryan Sullivan. Sonday and Almand had the best final score among 28 amateur players in the event.
Almand, who will be a sophomore next season, carded a final round 68. He had just one bogey in Thursday’s final round, to go along with five birdies.
Sonday, who be a junior in the fall, shot a final round 69, coming back from an opening round 75 to finish strong. After a bogey free second round, Sonday used a string of three-straight birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 and closed with a birdie on No. 18 for the second straight day to card his 69.
