Two Spartan signees win NC high school golf state titles
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men’s golf signees Robert Hoadley and Justin Clement became state champions this week, winning their respective classification individual North Carolina state championships.
Clement, playing as an individual for West Davidson HS, carded an opening round 72 and then shot a white-hot 64 on the second day to win the Class 2A title by seven shots. Clement’s second round had him shooting 34 on the front side and a nearly unthinkable 30 on the back for the lowest round in NCHSAA state tournament history. He carded the record-breaking round at Longleaf in Southern Pines.
Clement’s 36-hole total of 136 was the second-lowest tournament total in state tournament history. East Davidson’s John Carter III carded a 134 in 1999 at Statesville’s Broken Arrow.
Hoadley, also playing as an individual for Union Pines HS, won the Class 3A title by three shots thanks to a strong second round, as well. He was in the hunt after an opening round 70, but his final round 66 gave him an individual state championship.
It was his second individual state title, having won it in 2007, as well, and gave him a tie with Clement for the second-lowest tournament score ever. Hoadley’s title came at Keith Hills CC in Buies Creek.
