GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Will Almand fired a second round 70 to lead UNC Greensboro and put himself five shots off the lead at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade.
The Spartans are tied for 13th after 36 holes. UNCG had two players among with 23 that had to complete their first round Monday morning after play was suspended Sunday evening by darkness. The Spartans carded a second round score of 294 to sit at 598 entering Tuesday’s final round. Michigan State leads the way at 580, three shots ahead of Virginia Tech and Penn State.
Miami of Ohio’s Nathan Sutherland leads the tournament individually. The leader when the first round was finally completed on Monday morning, Sutherland shot even par on the 7,035-yard course on Monday afternoon to hold a one-shot lead over a trio of golfers.
Almand, a freshman from Cary, NC, is five shots back at 145, bouncing back from an opening round 75. He opened his second round with a pair of birdies and then had three birdies and three bogeys the rest of the way. A total of 17 golfers are within five shots of the lead to set-up for what could be a wild final round.
Drew Younts also had a strong second round for the Spartans, shooting even par 72 after carding a 79 in the opening round.
Tuesday’s final round will be a shotgun start beginning at 9 am.
