UNCG, Bowman first after opening round in Puerto Rico

The Flamboyan, Puerto Rico – Will Bowman shot an opening round 67 to grab the early individual lead and help UNC Greensboro atop the team leaderboard after the opening round at the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate hosted by St. John’s University.

Bowman, a junior from Greensboro, NC, recorded his career-best round on Monday. He carded a 34 on the front side and a 33 on the back to grab a four-shot lead after his five-under par round. Teammates Ryan Heisey and Drew Younts are tied with Notre Dame’s Doug Fortner for second at one-under 71.

The Spartans had a team score of 284 on the day, 10 shots better than Johnson & Wales and 12 better than St. John’s. Notre Dame and VCU are tied for fourth at 299.

The second round will be played on Tuesday.
