GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men’s golf coach Terrance Stewart announced Tuesday the commitments of William Almand and Richard Dickon Housman during the recent National Letter of Intent program’s signing period.
Almand is a native of Cary, NC. Currently a senior at Green Hope HS, Almand has been a part of the 4A state championship team each of the last two years. He recorded Top 10 finishes in both of those tournaments, finishing sixth in 2006 and ninth in 2007. On the juniors circuit this past summer, Almand finished third at the USGA’s Junior Amateur Qualifier, including a second-round 64, and second at the USGA Junior Amateur tournament. He also finished second at the AJGA Golf Pride and Dogwood Junior tournaments.
Currently, Almand is ranked fifth in the state by the Carolina Golf Association. Nationally, he is ranked No. 86 among the class of 2008 by Golfweek and No. 120 in the 2008 class by National Junior Scoreboard.
“Will is a very good student-athlete,” said Stewart. “He has been a great player for coach David Allen at Green Hope. His success in many national junior events will serve him well at the next level. He should contend for a starting spot next fall.”
Housman is a native of Norfolk, England. He reached the second round of the 2006 British Boys Championship and was a semifinalist in the British Low Handicap Competition in 2007.
“Dickon is a well-schooled player,” said Stewart. “He will compete for time in our starting line-up from the first day of practice. His game is well suited for the college courses and I expect him to have lots of success here.”
UNCG returns to action on February 16 when it kicks off the spring portion of this season’s schedule with the annual battle against High Point in the Carolina Cup. The Ryder Cup-style event will be played this season at the Old North State Golf Club in New London, NC.
