UNCG alumn Andy Bare records Top 20 finish at PGA's Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, NC - Making birdie on five of his last six holes, Andy Bare recorded a Top 20 finish to wrap up an incredible weekend at the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship at Forest Oaks GC.

Bare, who got into the tournament by tying for first in a Monday qualifier, shot a 70 on Sunday to finish at 12-under and tie for 20th place. It was just his second major tour event, having also played in the 2006 U.S. Open. He did not make the cut in that event.

"I've had a lot of people say this is where I belong and where I should be playing and, you know, it probably hasn't sunk in yet but I think I proved to myself that I can play with these guys, definitely," said Bare.

Starting the day in 12th place, Bare had a pair of double bogies sandwiched around a birdie to open his final round. He birdied No. 8 and bogeyed the 10th before his hot streak to close out a hot week.

In his last 25 events going back to back to the Fall of 2005, Bare has now made the cut 23 times. One of those rare misses came at the famed Winged Foot; the other was at PGA Tour Qualifying last Fall.

He has one win and 11 Top 10 finishes in his last 25 events. In that time, he has earned a little over $81,000. He’s been hot lately, finishing in the Top 5 in four of his last six tournaments – albeit not on the stage he finds himself this week. In fact, the most any of those tournaments netted him was a $9,000 check by finishing second at the Bermuda Run Classic back in June.

For his work this week, Bare earned a little over $52,000 - more than he made in his last 15 events combined on the mini-tours.

"I've thought about it before (about being able to play on the regular tour) and now I've been through it once and actually twice, played in the Open, played terrible but playing well this week," said Bare.

"It would be something I can get used to, you know what I mean," joked Bare.

But for now, for Bare, it will be back to the smaller tours for the rest of this year. "I'm going to do some Nationwide events, Idaho, California, Oregon, Utah, Q-School in late October."
