Bare makes the cut, sits just four shots off the lead at Wyndham
GREENSBORO, NC – The local guy has made good.
UNC Greensboro alumnus Andy Bare fired a 66 on Friday to easily make the cut and put himself in 22nd place entering Saturday’s third round at the 2007 Wyndham Golf Championship at Forest Oaks CC.
Bare, who tied for first in Monday’s qualifier with a 65 to earn one of four qualifier spots into the tournament, got off to a rocky start on Thursday when he bogeyed three of the first six holes. But he came back with a fury on the back side of the course, carding five birdies to finish the day two-under par.
He found himself in good shape as play began on Friday. Bare was in the last group to go off, meaning that he would know what he needed to make the cut as his round would close out. In addition, Bare’s threesome was starting at No. 10 tee, meaning that he would get to start on the same back 9 holes that he played so well on Thursday.
Bare did just that, recording a birdie on 11 and an eagle on the par 5 13th hole to put himself above the project cut (-4). He birdied Nos. 15 and 18 to finish the back side in 31 for the second straight day. This time, he played well on the front side, too, recording eight pars and a birdie at No. 7 to make the cut and record the best 36-hole total among players in the tournament that are not on the regular tour.
To begin play on Saturday, Bare will find himself just four shots off the lead. On a Forest Oaks track known for low scores amongst tour players, it might seem insurmountable for Bare. But the fact remains that he will be there to see Sunday - this time from inside the ropes.
Bare, a native of Pinehurst, graduated from UNCG in 2004, twice earning All-Southern Conference honors. The holder of UNCG’s record for a 54-hole score, Bare played the 2005 season on the New England Pro Golf Tour (formerly known at the Cleveland Golf Tour), playing in 10 events and finishing in the money in nine of them. He earned his first professional win at the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Celebrity Classic that June.
He has spent the last two seasons primarily playing on the Tar Heel Tour. Last year, he earned a spot in the 106th U.S. Open at Winged Foot GC. He did not make the cut in that event – his first appearance in a major tour event.
In his last 25 events going back to back to the Fall of 2005, Bare has now made the cut 23 times. One of those rare misses came at the famed Winged Foot; the other was at PGA Tour Qualifying last Fall.
He has one win and 11 Top 10 finishes in his last 25 events. In that time, he has earned a little over $81,000. He’s really been hot lately, finishing in the Top 5 in four of his last six tournaments – albeit not on the stage he finds himself this week. In fact, the most any of those tournaments netted him was a $9,000 check by finishing second at the Bermuda Run Classic back in June.
But if he can put two more rounds together like he did the first two days at Forest Oaks - the home course of the UNCG men’s golf team and the site for the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Championship – he might have a whole lot more than that to his earnings total.
