UNCG's Bowman wins 62nd annual Durham Herald-Sun Golf Classic
DURHAM, NC - UNC Greensboro's Will Bowman cruised to victory at the 62nd annual Durham Herald-Sun Golf Classic last weekend, winning five matches in a span of five days at Hillandale Golf Club.
After qualifying with a score of 140 to be seeded seventh, Bowman, who will be a junior next season, began by routing Tyler Woodside, 6 and 4, on Wednesday afternoon. He followed that up with a win on Thursday over Lea Couch, 3 and 2, and a Friday victory over Lex Gray, 2 and 1.
Following a Saturday win by forfeit in the semifinals, Bowman was set to take on David Synan in the final on Sunday. The match was all square after 11 holes. Bowman, however, took advantage on No. 12 when Synan hit his drive out of bounds.
Bowman's lead became two on No. 14 when he hit a perfect chip within four feet of the cup to birdie the hole. Synan then dropped three back when he couldn't save par at 15 and the match was over after Synan went out of bounds off the tee at No. 16.
It was Bowman's first time ever playing in the event.
