UNCG fourth, Stamey and Bowman record Top 10s at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – UNC Greensboro carded a final round team score of 287 on Tuesday and Nathan Stamey and Will Bowman each had Top 10 finishes as UNCG rallied for a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade on Pinehurst No. 8.

Stamey carded the second best round of the day with a 69 to finish tied for seventh. The highlight of the round was when Stamey, a senior from Canton, NC, eagled No. 3, a 386-yard par-4. Starting the day on No. 8 in the shotgun format, Stamey’s eagle moved him from even par to minus-2. He closed the round out with a birdie on No. 7, a hole he birdied in the opening round and bogeyed in Monday’s second round.

After consecutive rounds of 74, Bowman carded a 75. Starting the day just four shots off the lead, Bowman began the day with a par on No. 7 and then bogeyed No. 8 and doubled the ninth hole. But he had six pars and two birdies over the next eight holes to settle in and finish the day with his first collegiate Top 10 finish.

Indiana’s Seth Brandon held on for a wire-to-wire individual victory. He shot even-par 72 on Tuesday for a one-shot win over teammate Ren Han, East Carolina’s Markus Leandersson and St. Mary’s (CA) Mike McRae. Three of those four shot even-par on Tuesday with McRae shooting a 71.

Indiana coasted to the team championship, maintaining the big lead it opened up in the first round on Sunday. After leading by 17 shots to begin play on Monday and extending that lead to 24 in the second round, the Hoosiers held that margin on Tuesday with a round of 287, equaling that of Eastern Kentucky’s and UNCG’s to record the top team final round score of the day. UNCG’s 287 was a team-low for a round this season.

UNCG returns to action on Saturday, March 29 when it travels to Grasonville, MD for the Lacrosse Homes Collegiate at the Prospect Bay CC.
