WHEATON, IL – UNC Greensboro’s Nathan Stamey was one of 78 players to complete their rounds, firing an opening round 73 at the first day of the 82nd United States Amateur Public Links Championships on Monday.
Play was suspended at 2:28 pm CT by a line of thunderstorms and was never resumed. The opening day of action was finally called off at 5:40 pm local time. Among those still on the course is defending champion Casey Watabu of Kapaa, Hawaii.
Among the 78 players that completed play on Monday, Stamey is four shots off the lead. Mark Harrell, 21, of Hazlehurst, GA., a 2007 U.S. Open qualifier who missed the 36-hole cut by one stroke, and 22-year-old Clayton Rask of Otsego, MN, each carded 3-under-par 69s to take the clubhouse lead on day one of the weather-delayed stroke-play qualifying portion.
The Public Links championship consists of two 18-hole rounds of qualifying. On Wednesday, 64 players advance to the match-play portion of the championship.
Stamey, a native of Canton, NC, started on the back-9. He bogeyed No. 10 to open, but got back to even with a birdie at No. 12. However, back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 put Stamey at two-over. But he responded with a birdie on No. 17 and a par on No. 18 to finish the side with a 37.
Coming back to the front side, Stamey bogeyed Nos. 2 and 7, but responded both times with birdies on the following holes to close out the front side with an even-par 36.
Harrell was in position to make the cut at Oakmont (PA) Country Club last month until eventual champion Angel Cabrera birdied his 36th hole to take the cutline from 11 over to 10 over. That eliminated Harrell and 16 other players, including Phil Mickelson.
Playing in the same grouping, Harrell, a rising senior at the University of Alabama, and Rask, a fifth-year senior at the University of Minnesota, combined for 11 birdies in grabbing a one-stroke lead over UCLA rising junior Lucas Lee, 19, of Brazil, and 25-year-old Brigham Young University graduate Nicholas Becker of Boise, Idaho.
After the Open, Harrell took a couple of weeks off. He still had some competitive rust on Monday, but managed to register six birdies against three bogeys. He did hole a 35-foot swinging birdie putt at the par-3 eighth – his 17th of the day – and then converted a 15-footer for bogey at No. 9 to conclude the round.
Rask has qualified for two previous USGA championships, but has yet to make it to match play, missing at the 2002 U.S. Junior and the 2005 APL at Shaker Run in Lebanon, Ohio. But a five-birdie, two-bogey effort put Rask in solid position to qualify for match play.
The first round will resume on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with the 78 players that held Monday afternoon tee times needing to finish their opening rounds. The second round is slated to begin at 10:10 am, with most of those players playing early Tuesday morning having to turn right around to play again.
The afternoon starting times are scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m. Stamey is among those in the afternoon start times. His original 1:30 pm tee time has been pushed back to 4:40 pm Tuesday. With just three groups behind Stamey, it should leave him in position to know what he needs to qualify coming down the stretch.
