GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s Drew Younts picked up a tournament win and former Spartan Andy Bare won a U.S. Open qualifier as summer golf action began to heat up.
Bare began his quest for another U.S. Open appearance when he tied for first in his local qualifier in Jacksonville, FL on May 7. Bare fired a 69 at Timuquana Country Club to tied for first with Ryan Blaum and move onto the section qualifiers on June 4.
Bare, who became the first Spartan alumn to qualify for the Open last year, will compete in Columbus, OH, one of 12 sectional qualifying sites in the United States. That site will be played at the OSU Scarlet CC, Scioto CC and Double Eagle CC.
The U.S. Open will be played June 14-17 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Younts, who will be a sophomore next year, won the Forest Oaks Invitational last week, marking the second straight year that a Spartan won the event. Last year, UNCG’s J.D. Bass won the tournament. Younts carded rounds of 65 and 71 to win this year’s event.
In addition, David Heyen finished second at the 13th Annual Keith Hills Amateur in Buies Creek, NC. He finished one shot behind Brent Parrish. Heyen carded rounds of 69 and 73 at the event, recovering from a two-over par front nine in the second round to finish at even-par. Heyen was trying to follow in the steps of Bare and Jake Lowder, who won the event in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
