Bass four shots back, Spartans only 10 back entering final round at Pinehurst
PINEHURST, N.C. – J.D. Bass shot a second round 73 on Monday to stay within striking distance of the top and lead UNC Greensboro to its seventh place team standing after two rounds at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade.
Bass is tied for fifth place at even-par 144 after 36 holes, four shots behind Indiana’s Jorge Campillo. Campillo, the 19th ranked college player in the country, fired a 67 on Monday to take over the individual lead. He has a three-shot lead over three golfers tied for second, including ninth-ranked Colt Knost of SMU.
The Spartans, who began the day third in the team standings, are still within striking distance for the team trophy as well. Seven teams are within 10 shots of team standing leaders Indiana and Michigan entering Tuesday’s final round. The Big 10 rivals are sitting atop the team standings at 590 with SMU sitting two shots behind in third place. UNCG is seventh at a team total of 600 entering the final round.
Along with Bass in fifth place, David Heyen had a strong round for the second straight day. He shot a 74 on Monday to sit at three-over and a tie for 11th place after 36 holes. He is seven shots out of the lead, but is in position for his first Top 20 finish this season.
Although the start of play has been delayed each of the last two days by morning frost, a shotgun start is slated for 9 am on Tuesday.
