PINEHURST, N.C. – J.D. Bass fired an opening round 71 to sit in a tie for third and lead UNC Greensboro to a third-place team standing after the first round at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade.
Bass sits two shots behind Marshall’s Trent Schambach and one shot behind Michigan’s Bill Rankin in the individual standings. Bass, a senior from Fairview, NC, recorded three birdies and one double bogey in his round to come into the clubhouse at one-under.
David Heyen is also in contention for individual honors, sitting in a tie for eighth place after a one-over 73.
The Spartans are tied with Indiana for third place in the team standings at 297, trailing a pair of Top-40 ranked teams. No. 40 SMU leads at 293, followed by No. 38 Mississippi at 294.
The second round gets underway Monday morning at 9 am.
