Spartans rally on final day of VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout

RUTHER GLEN, Va. – J.D. Bass shot a one-under 71, while Nathan Stamey and Jake Lowder each shot even-par 72 to lead UNCG to a final day total 289 and a 12th place finish at the VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout.

Bass and Lowder bounced back from a tough day on Monday when they shot 10-over for the first 36 holes. Bass was one of 19 golfers to shoot under par on Tuesday in a field of 75 players.

Stamey wound up UNCG’s top finisher coming in a tie for 28th place with a 54-hole total of 219. The Spartans tied for 12th with East Carolina and tournament host VCU.

Wake Forest’s Kyle Reifers won the event’s individual title with a 202, beating teammate Webb Simpson by one shot. The Deacons also won the team title by a resounding 14 shots over Kent State and Tulsa.
