SALISBURY, NC – Former UNC Greensboro men’s golfer Jason Martin claimed his second career victory on the Tarheel Tour with a win at the Salisbury Classic this past weekend at the par-71 6,576-yard Country Club of Salisbury. He won the 54-hole event with a three-day total of 198 (-15).
The Lenoir, NC native fired a final round two-under-par 69 on the Donald Ross layout to land a one shot victory over Brazil’s Fernando Mechereffe.
Martin began his round Sunday with an eagle at the par-5 third. The former Spartan then strung together pars on holes four through 12 before hitting some bumps down the stretch.
“After my birdie on 13, I hit it to about 12 feet on 14 and just went brain dead. I hit my first putt by the hole and then missed the short one coming back,” said Martin.
“I was able to get it back with a birdie on 15, but then a bad tee shot on 16 left me with no shot and I wound up on the back of the green, and another three putt,” Martin explained. “My shot of the day was the approach to the 18th. I was between a 7-iron and an 8-iron and I wound up hitting a little 7. She never left the flag and I was able to two putt from there for the win.
The $11,000 payday vaulted the former North Carolina Amateur
Champion to fifth on the tour’s money list with
$26,632.74.
Martin posted a 62 in the first round to tie for the lead. He followed that with a 67 in the second round to take the outright lead heading to the final round on Sunday.
In addition, UNCG alumnus Andy Bare finished tied for seventh this week in Salisbury with a 10-under 203. Bare, who earlier this summer qualified for the U.S. Open, is fourth on the Tarheel Tour money list with $26,928.34.
The tour heads to Huntersville, NC next week for the Skybrook Open on July 25-27.
