Third round washed out at Pinehurst, Spartans finish fifth
PINEHURST, N.C. – The final round of play at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament was washed out Tuesday, shortening the tournament to 36 holes.
Light to moderate rain fell on Pinehurst No. 8 through the night, dropping close to a half-inch of rain on the course and rendering conditions unplayable.
SMU’s Colt Knost was declared the individual medalist, winning the championship by one shot over UNC Wilmington’s Will Shambley.
UNCG’s Jake Lowder finished tied for sixth, just four shots off the pace. Lowder, a senior from Huntersville, NC, shot the best round of the two-day tournament with a three-under-par 69 on Monday to jump from 52nd to sixth on the leaderboard. It is Lowder’s first Top 10 finish this season and the tenth of his career.
J.D. Bass finished in a tie for 13th for UNCG, six shots off the pace.
SMU was declared the team champion with a score of 592. The Spartans finished fifth as a team with a score of 599, seven shots behind SMU. UAB was second at 596, followed by Indiana at 597 and Charlotte at 598.
