PINEHURST, N.C. -- Jake Lowder shot the best round of the day with a three-under-par 69 to jump from 52nd to sixth on the leaderboard and keep UNC Greensboro in contention after two rounds at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate men's golf tournament held at Pinehurst No. 8.
Lowder, a senior from Huntersville, NC, began the day tied for 52 after shooting a 78 on Sunday. However, Lowder carded the best round of the day and the best of the tournament thus far on Monday. He opened the round with a pair of birdies and also recorded birdies on Nos. 7, 10 and 15 on Monday.
First round leader Nathan Stamey struggled on Monday. The Spartans' sophomore took a one-shot lead into Monday after shooting a 70 on Sunday. However, he shot an 82 on Monday to sit tied for 34th entering Tuesday's final round.
Lowder trails SMU’s Colt Knost, the individual leader, by four shots. Knost fired even-par 72 on Monday. UNCG’s J.D. Bass is also near the top, sitting in a tie for 13th and six shots off the pace.
The Spartans as a team sit fifth with a team score of 599, seven shots off the lead held by SMU. UAB is second at 596, followed by Indiana at 597 and Charlotte at 598.
The third round is slated for Tuesday morning, weather permitting.
