PINEHURST, N.C. – Nathan Stamey fired a two-under 70 to sit atop the leaderboard and lead his team to a third-place standing after Sunday’s first round at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate played on Pinehurst No. 8.
Stamey’s 70 was good for a one shot lead over Indiana’s Drew Allenspach and SMU’s Colt Knost. Opening the day on the back nine, Stamey, a sophomore from Canton, NC, recorded four birdies and two bogies, which came back-to-back on 14 and 15, to card his two-under-par round.
Teammate Kent Copeland is tied for 14th place after shooting 74 on Sunday.
Southern Methodist holds the team lead after the first round, carding a 291 in the opening round. Tournament co-host Indiana is second at 294, followed by UNCG and UAB at 298. Xavier and Penn State are tied for fifth at 301.
