Bass' eighth-place finish leads UNCG at Rice Intercollegiate

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – J.D. Bass fired a final round 71 to finish eighth in the individual standings as UNC Greensboro placed 13th at the sixth annual Rice Intercollegiate at Willowisp CC.

Santa Clara won the event with a team score of 889, five shots better than Colorado State. Tournament host Rice was third, nine shots off the pace.

Colorado State’s Derrick Whiting won the individual title, winning on the third playoff hole over Brian Grossman of Stephen F. Austin. Michael Nicoletti of Santa Clara and Louisiana Tech’s Trey McNeill were also involved in the playoff, but were eliminated after the first sudden-death hole.

Bass, a junior from Fairview, NC, fired one-over par on the 6,700-yard course on Tuesday for an eighth place finish. He was three shots off of the pace for his first Top 10 finish this season and the fifth of his collegiate career.

The Spartans return to action on February 18 when they take on High Point for the Carolina Cup in Siler City, NC.
