Trevis Simpson named College Sports Madness SoCon Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C.—UNCG's Trevis Simpson has been named Southern Conference men's basketball player of the week by College Sports Madness.
In a pair of road wins last week over College of Charleston and The Citadel, Simpson averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in helping UNCG snap its 11-game losing streak and providing the Spartans with their first conference road sweep in four seasons.
Against Charleston, the sophomore guard scored 16 points while adding five rebounds and two steals in UNCG's 73-66 win. His three-point play with 3:14 remaining not only snapped a 63-63 tie, but also gave the Spartans the lead for good in interim head coach Wes Miller's first career victory.
Simpson capped his excellent weekend in high-flying fashion on Saturday against the Bulldogs by finishing with 19 points and four rebounds in a 67-66 victory. He scored the game-winning basket on a sideline out-of-bounds alley-oop dunk with less than a second remaining.
The SoCon's third-leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, Simpson has scored in double figures 16 times in 18 games this season.
The Spartans (4-14 overall, 2-4 SoCon) open a five-game home stand by hosting Chattanooga, 7 p.m., Thursday at Greensboro Coliseum.
