GREENSBORO, N.C.—UNCG men's basketball's annual Blue-Gold scrimmage game is set for Sunday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
Head coach Mike Dement and the Spartans officially opened practice on Friday, Oct. 14 and this will be the public's first opportunity to see the team in action under actual game conditions. The teams will play a regulation game, complete with two 20-minute halves, halftime and media timeouts.
Teams will be divided up in a special draft to be held later this week. Associate Head Coach Corey Gipson and Director of Operations J.B. Tanner will coach one squad, and assistant coaches Wes Miller and Kevin Oleksiak will coach the other.
The Spartans return four starters and several key reserves from last season's squad, including 2011 Southern Conference All-Freshman team honoree Trevis Simpson. In 27 games, including nine starts, the 6-4 swingman averaged 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Other returning starters include 6-10 senior center Aloysius Henry (9.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and junior point guard Kyle Randall (9.4 ppg, 103 assists). Forward Aaron Brackett (7.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and guard Korey Van Dussen (8.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg) also return.
UNCG plays its only exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 3 when the Spartans host Greensboro College at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gym. The Spartans open the regular season on Nov. 11 at Tennessee, and begin the home portion of their schedule by hosting UNC Pembroke, 7 p.m., Nov. 17 at Greensboro Coliseum.
