Coles buzzer-beater in overtime lifts Gold over Blue, 56-53
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Brian Cole stole an outlet pass and took two steps before knocking down a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the buzzer went off in overtime to give the Gold squad a 56-53 win over the Blue team in UNCG's annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage in Fleming Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Playing for the Gold team was Cole, Elhanan Bone, Aaron Brackett, Brandon Davis, Robby Dilmore, Taylor Hoffer, Drew Parker and Isaac Swindell. Kendall Bethea, Brandon Evans, Cody Henegar, Aloysius Henry, Tyler McNeely, Darrius Sellers, Korey Van Dussen and David Williams comprised the Blue team.
Davis led the Gold squad with 17 points on 7-11 shooting, while newcomer Brackett had the lone double-double of the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cole was also in double figures with 12 points, including 3-6 from behind the arc.
Evans led all scorers on the Blue team with a game-high 19 points and Henry added 16 points in the losing effort. Freshman Henegar went 5-7 from the field for 10 points, as well.
The Gold team hopped out to an early 12-2 lead to start the game thanks to eight early points from Davis, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Blue team fought back though, behind 10 points from Henegar, to take a 23-21 lead into halftime.
The two teams continued to trade the lead in the second half before Van Dussen knocked down a jumper with 45 seconds left to give the Blue team a 49-47 lead.
After a timeout with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Parker drove to the lane and put up a potential game-tying jumper with four seconds left. He missed his shot, but grabbed his own rebound and put it back up and in with three seconds left to tie the game at 49 and send it to overtime.
In the overtime session, the Gold team went ahead 53-50 on a Cole jumper, but Evans came right back down the court for the Blue team and knocked down a 3 from the right wing. The score stayed that way until the waning seconds when Cole threw up a 3-pointer, but it drew iron into the hands of Sellers.
Sellers looked to hit a teammate down the floor for the winning shot, but Cole jumped up and stole the ball before draining the game-winning shot.
The Spartans will continue practicing in preparation for the season-opener at Virginia Commonwealth on Nov. 12.
