GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement received a commitment on Wednesday, the opening day of the early signing period in the National Letter of Intent program, when center Brian Cole signed with the Spartans.
Cole, 6-8 and 225 lbs., is a native of Dacula, GA, and product of Dacula HS. He plays his AAU ball with the Atlanta Celtics, one of the premier AAU programs in the country.
He helped his team to the regional title last season, averaging better than 16 points and eight boards. Already having topped the 1,000-point mark for his career at Dacula, the left-handed Cole was an all-region selection last year. Dacula went 27-3 on the way to the regional title. In the playoffs, Cole had 16 points in the opening-round win over defending champion Tucker and a game-high 22 points in a second-round loss to Lithita Springs.
"We think Brian can be a tremendous asset to our program and an impact player in our frontcourt," said Dement. "For a post player coming out of high school, he is fairly polished. He has good footwork and has the ability to move with and without the basketball. In addition, he is a quality person that will fit in well at our university and with our current players."
Cole is rated as one of the Top 40 centers in the nation according to Scouts, Inc. and is among the Top 30 seniors in the state of Georgia according to both Scouts, Inc. and Hoop Scoop. He is a three-star-rated recruit according to Rivals.com.
UNCG, which has no seniors on the current roster, opens the season Friday at Charlotte. Game time is set for 8 pm.
