GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement confirmed Monday that Jackson, TN, native Brandon Evans has enrolled in classes at the university and has transferred from East Carolina to play at UNCG.
Under NCAA transfer regulations, Evans is ineligible to participate in game action for the Spartans during the upcoming 2008-09 season. Evans will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2009-10 season. He will be allowed to practice with the squad this year, but can not travel with the team.
A 6-2 guard who played his high school basketball at Liberty Tech, Evans played in 50 games off the bench over the last two seasons for the Pirates. He originally committed to Murray State coming out of high school, but received a release from his NLI after a coaching change. He then enrolled at East Carolina, where he averaged 3.2 ppg over the last two seasons as a combo guard.
"We are happy that Brandon has decided to join our program," said Dement. "Brandon had a prior relationship with assistant coach Kevin Easley from Kevin's time as an assistant at UT-Martin. When Brandon thought he needed a change, he expressed an interest in our program to Kevin. We feel Brandon can make a solid contribution to our squad."
As a senior at Liberty Tech, Evans averaged 19.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest in helping his team to the Tennessee 2A state title. He was a two-time all-region selection in his two years at Liberty Tech, with the team compiling a 60-8 record during that time. Evans lived in Fayetteville, NC his first two years of high school, attending Westover HS.
Evans will be on scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year because Sam Mason has decided to no longer play basketball while enrolled at UNCG. Mason sat out all of last season and approached the coaching staff after last season about giving up his spot on the roster.
The Spartans and Pirates are scheduled to play each other the next two seasons in a home-and-home series. UNCG visits East Carolina this coming season on Dec. 13.
