Blue-White basketball scrimmage set for Saturday evening
GREENSBORO, NC – The only chance to get a preseason look at the UNC Greensboro men's basketball team will take place Saturday evening when the annual Blue-White scrimmage is held at Fleming Gym beginning at 5 pm.
The scrimmage, being held as a prelude to the men's soccer match against arch-rival Elon that gets underway at 7 pm, will run for a little over an hour. The team will hold an autograph session immediately afterwards and admission for the scrimmage is free. Spartan Club members are reminded that there is a reception between the two events on Saturday night.
UNCG returns two starters and six regulars from last season's 19-12 squad. The three-point shooting duo of Kendall Toney and Mikko Koivisto have already accounted for close to 250 three-pointers in their careers. While the Spartans have to replace three starters, including arguably the best player ever in a UNCG uniform in Kyle Hines, juniors Ben Stywall and Pete Brown and freshmen Elhanan Bone and Damian Eargle are set for the challenge in the frontcourt.
The Spartans will play two closed scrimmages in the preseason this year, as opposed to the traditional exhibition game against a non-Division I opponent. By NCAA rule, the public is not allowed to attend the closed scrimmages that will be played against North Carolina A&T and Winthrop. Hence, Saturday will be the only chance to see the Spartans in game action prior to the opener at Charlotte on Nov. 14. The home opener will be played three days later on Nov. 17 when the Spartans host Webber International at 7 pm.
Along with the Blue-White scrimmage on Friday evening, UNCG will offer a final opportunity to buy tickets for the Feb. 5 game against Davidson at a discounted price. Tickets for the game to be played at the Greensboro Coliseum are normally sold in the price range of $15 to $50. However, fans can get tickets for $10 each at the Blue-White scrimmage.
Season tickets are also still available in the Spartan Spirit Section. They can be purchased at the Blue-White scrimmage on Friday night or by calling the UNCG athletics ticket office at 334-3250. UNCG's new print-at-home ticketing system, available at UNCGSpartans.com, will go on-line for basketball before the end of the month.
