Ben Thompson named UNCG men's basketball Director of Operations
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement announced Wednesday the appointment of Ben Thompson to the position of Director of Basketball Operations.
Thompson replaces Tripp Pendergast, who resigned this summer to become an assistant coach at Pfeiffer University.
Thompson is a 2006 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies along with minors in residential property management and leadership. He earned a master's degree from Virginia Tech in health and physical education with a specialization in sports promotion in 2007. While at Virginia Tech, he served as a graduate manager in 2006-07 for the men's basketball program and was promoted to co-video coordinator for the 2007-08 season.
"Ben was a big part of Seth Greenberg's program at Virginia Tech the last two years and came highly recommended to us," said UNCG coach Mike Dement. "We look forward to the experience he has gained during that time and brings with him to UNCG."
Thompson lettered in seven sports at Saint Paul (VA) HS. In basketball, he was a three-year starter and two-year captain while playing for his father, Rick. He also served a stint as an assistant basketball coach at Blacksburg (VA) HS while he was an undergrad at Virginia Tech.
UNCG opens the 2008-09 season at Charlotte on Nov. 14. The team will hold a Blue-Gold scrimmage on Saturday evening, Oct. 25 at Fleming Gym. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm before the men's soccer match with Elon later that night.
