SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro seniors Kevin Oleksiak and Kyle Hines were named the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week and Player of the Month, respectively, on Monday.
Oleksiak was named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after his two outstanding games in wins over Central Arkansas and Georgia Southern last week. Oleksiak had 28 points in the win over Central Arkansas, then a season-high, and followed that up with one better - a 29-point effort in the win over Georgia Southern. For the week, Oleksiak was 10-16 from three-point range (58.3 percent).
It is the first time that Oleksiak has earned SoCon Player of the Week honors. He is the third different Spartan to earn the award this season, joining Kyle Hines and Kendall Toney, who won the first two awards of the season.
Hines was named the Southern Conference’s Co-Player of the Month for the month of December. Hines, who shared the award with Davidson’s Stephen Curry, recorded three double-doubles in the month and averaged 16.3 point per game, 10.5 rebounds per game and 3.8 blocks per game in six games. Hines shot 51.9 percent from the field and led his team to wins over UNCW and Fordham. Hines extended his nation’s longest double figure scoring streak to 60 straight during the month (now at 62).
Hines has now won the Player of the Month award five out of a possible 11 times in his career. He won the award in January 2005, 2006 and 2007 to go along with December 2006.
UNCG will host The Citadel on Monday night at 7 pm.
