Ricky Hickman named SoCon Men's Basketball Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro senior guard Ricky Hickman has been named the Southern Conference’s men’s basketball Player of the Week for his outstanding play in the Spartans’ two wins last week.
Hickman, a 6-3 native of Winston-Salem, NC, and product of East Forsyth HS, came through in the clutch in both of UNCG’s wins to keep the Spartans in a first-place tie atop the Southern Conference’s North Division standings. He scored UNCG’s last 17 points and combined with Kyle Hines to score the Spartans’ last 40 points in UNCG’s 69-54 win over Furman on Saturday night. He finished the game with a season-high 31 points.
Hickman, who also won SoCon Player of the Week honors back on December 12, followed that up with 15 points against Georgia Southern on Monday night, but knocked down three free throws in the final 36 seconds to break a 62-62 tie and made a key steal with six seconds left to thwart an attempt for the Eagles to tie the game.
It marked the second straight week that a UNCG player won Player of the Week honors. Last week, Kyle Hines picked up the SoCon’s weekly award.
UNCG (12-9, 9-2) has won five straight overall and six straight in league play, the program’s longest conference winning streak in more than a decade. The Spartans will travel to face Davidson on Saturday at 2 pm in battle of division leaders. The game will be televised by SportSouth.
