UNCG to face UNCW in BracketBusters
GREENSBORO, NC – Pairing for the remaining 37 games in the BracketBusters series were announced Tuesday and UNC Greensboro will face sister-school UNC Wilmington in a BracketBuster series matchup over the weekend of Feb. 16-17 at Fleming Gym.
UNC Wilmington is out of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks (5-15) are coming off a 65-58 win over George Mason at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington on Monday night. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for UNC Wilmington, an NCAA Tournament team last year. Junior center Vladimir Kuljanin led the way with 17 points off the bench.
UNCG (12-9) is on a five-game winning streak, the latest coming last night in a 65-62 win over Georgia Southern at home. Kyle Hines had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The two teams have not met since November 1991 when UNCG was new to the NCAA Division I level. The Spartans were competing in their first season as an independent before joining the Big South two season later. UNCG won that meeting, 68-66, at Fleming Gym for its first win as a Division I program. UNCW won the year before when UNCG was a Division II program, 69-51, at Trask Coliseum.
As a part of the BracketBusters series agreement, UNCG will travel to Trask Coliseum during the regular season next year. Last year, UNCG lost at St. Peter’s in overtime during the BracketBusters series. UNCW has not played in BracketBusters since a loss at Illinois-Chicago in Feburary 2004.
The game will be played either Feb. 16 or 17 at Fleming Gym. The exact date and time will be announced later this week. Tickets will go on sale after that information is determined.
In other series match-ups involving Southern Conference teams,
Elon will visit Georgia State, Chattanooga will host Jacksonville
State and, in the main bracket for ESPN, Appalachian State will
travel to Wichita State.
