GREENSBORO, NC – On the first day of the early signing period for the National Letter of Intent, UNC Greensboro men’s basketball coach Mike Dement got the one and only commitment he needed for next year’s freshman class, signing Gaston Day School’s Kendall Toney to an NLI.
Toney, a 6-3 swingman from Charlotte, NC, attended Phillip O’Berry High School in Charlotte prior to this year. He averaged 15 points and six rebounds as a junior last year. He is one of three Gaston Day players expected to sign NLIs for Division I schools this week.
“We are excited about Kendall and his family joining us,” said Dement. “He is a really good person and his personality and goals fit well with what we hope to do in building this team.
“Kendall plays hard every time out and competes both defensively and offensively,” Dement said. “I like his strength and intensity and the fact that he can both attack the basket and shoot the ball well from the perimeter. He can be an excellent defender with his strength and speed. Coach (Shaun) Wiseman has a great program at Gaston Day and Kendall will benefit from playing there. They play a high level of competition and practice and prepare much like a college program. Kendall's adjustment to Division I next season should be much easier after his development at Gaston Day.”
Last summer, Toney was selected to play in the top tier of Five-Star Basketball’s Orange-White Classic at Hampden-Sydney with players from across the country.
“Kendall is happy about his decision to join UNCG,” said Wiseman. “He liked the campus and the coaching staff, and he felt comfortable with the players. Kendall felt like UNCG was the right situation for him, so he chose to sign early. I’m excited about Kendall’s choice. He is a hard working young man that has a bright future ahead of him.”
