GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s Kyle Hines and Ricky Hickman have been named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association’s All-State squads, earning first and second-team honors, respectively.
The team consists of NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals. NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams.
The All-State basketball teams include a five-player first-team, as well as a five-player second team (plus those involved in ties). Teams are selected for men and women in both the college (Division II, III and NAIA) and university (NCAA Division I) divisions.
The 2005-06 NCCSIA men’s basketball university division all-state first team is headed by three repeat performers from last year’s first-team – John Goldsberry (UNC Wilmington), Brendan Winters (Davidson) and Curtis Withers (Charlotte). Kyle Hines (UNC Greensboro), a 2005 all-state second team member, earned first-team honors this year along with Maurice Latham (Campbell).
De’Angelo Alexander (Charlotte), T.J. Carter (UNC Wilmington), Ricky Hickman (UNC Greensboro), Ian Johnson (Davidson), Corey Rouse (East Carolina) and D.J. Thompson (Appalachian State) earned second-team all-state recognition. Hickman was also recognized on last year’s all-state second team.
Hines was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection by both the coaches and media. He also earned USBWA All-District honors. The Sicklerville, N.J., sophomore averaged 19.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks while shooting 62.2 percent (sixth in the nation) from the field. He ranked among the Southern Conference’s top 10 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocks, steals and minutes. Hines’ 578 points in 2005-06 rank as the second most in school history and most in Division I era. He has already broken UNCG’s career blocked shots record (190).
Hickman earned NCCSIA second-team all-state recognition for the second-straight year after averaging 18.7 points for UNCG, also topping the 500-point mark this season. A first-team all-league pick by Southern Conference coaches and second-team selection by the media, Hickman lead the league in steals (2.7) for the second-consecutive season.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball. Nearly 400 student-athletes have been recognized by NCCSIA as all-state performers since 2003.
Goldsberry led CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament participant UNC Wilmington in nearly every offensive category. He was named Second-Team All-CAA, All-Defensive and All-Academic in the league as well as the recipient of the CAA’s Dean Ehlers Award for Leadership. He averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 assists for the 25-8 Seahawks. The Vandalia, Ohio native set a school record with 530 assists and closed out his career by appearing in 121 games and collecting 1,104 points.
Latham led the Camels to the biggest turnaround in the Atlantic Sun Conference by rating among the league leaders in scoring (3rd, 18.0), rebounding (2nd, 8.9), field goal accuracy (7th, .534), free throw percentage (13th, .774), offensive rebounds (1st) and defensive boards (4th). The senior from Norfolk, Va., became just the 11st player in Campbell senior college (since 1961-62) history to score more than 500 points in a year (503), while posting 12 double-doubles and scoring in double digits 25 times. He was a first-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference choice.
Winters led NCAA Tournament participant Davidson to the Southern Conference title. An NABC All-District 5 second-team choice, the product of Denver, Colo., earned first-team all-conference honors for the third-straight season. He averaged 16.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while hitting 84 percent of his free throws. Winters ended his career as Davidson’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals (268), while ranking fourth among Wildcat career scorers (1,892 points). He set a school record for the 20-11 Wildcats by hitting 37-straight free throws in ’05-06.
Withers was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 choice, his third-straight league first unit honor. A second-team NABC all-district performer, Withers averaged 16.1 points and ranked fifth in the nation in rebounding (11.3). He led the A-10 with 18 double-doubles and concluded his career as the 49ers’ seventh all-time leading scorer, third in rebounding. He led Charlotte to a second-place finish in the A-10 and the program’s ninth post-season berth in 10 years.
Teammate De’Angelo Alexander earned second-team NCCSIA all-state recognition after leading Charlotte in scoring with a 17.0 average that ranked third in the A-10. A first-team all-conference selection, Alexander topped the loop in 3-point field goals made (96) while shooting 42.9 percent from long range.
UNC Wilmington guard T.J. Carter earned second-team honors after leading the CAA champions in scoring (13.6). He tallied 23 points vs. Hofstra in the CAA title game and 25 against George Washington in the NCAA tourney.
Davidson senior forward Ian Johnson also gained second-team all-state honors after ranking among SoCon leaders in scoring (7th, 16.0), rebounding (9th, 6.4), 3-point field goal percentage (3rd, .425), field goal accuracy (8th, .521) and free throw shooting (8th, .771). A second-team All-Southern Conference choice, Johnson was an all-league tournament selection. He equaled his career-high with 26 points vs. Ohio State in the NCAA first round.
Corey Rouse, a senior forward from East Carolina, was a second-team all-state pick after leading Conference USA in rebounding (10.8) for the second-straight year. A second-team All-CUSA selection, the Kinston native tallied a league-best 17 double-doubles while ranking eighth in scoring (14.3).
Appalachian State junior guard D.J. Thompson also earned second-team all-state recognition after ranking third among SoCon scoring leaders (19.1). An all-league tournament choice, Thompson canned 98 threes during the season, the second-highest tally in school history, while matching his school record for steals in a year (81).
