Baseball Heads To East Carolina For Midweek Tilt
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Fresh off a series win over Albany over the weekend, the UNCG baseball team plays its first road game of the season Tuesday traveling to Greenville, N.C. for a midweek encounter with East Carolina at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Pirates enter the contest having swept St. John's in a three-game weekend set.
Junior catcher Cambric Moye was the hero in the series finale with the Great Danes as he smashed a two-out, three-run home run to deep left field which tied the game in the bottom of the ninth at eight runs apiece. Albany pitcher Kevin Archbold then dropped an infield popup in the bottom of the 10th inning which allowed freshman infielder Nin Marrero to score from second and give UNCG a 9-8 win.
In Saturday's game with the Great Danes, sophomore right hander Lee Gilliam was brilliant, throwing seven scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out a pair of batters to earn his first win of the season. He owns an ERA of 0.52 which is currently the third-lowest in the Southern Conference.
# UNCG and ECU have faced off on the diamond 11 times prior to Tuesday's game. The Spartans hold a 7-4 advantage in the series but the teams have not met since the 2001 campaign. The Blue and Gold claimed a 9-5 win over the Pirates in Greenville March 27th of that season.
# Link Jarrett is the second head coach in the 24-year history of UNCG baseball. He spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Auburn University. The game with East Carolina marks a return to Greenville for Jarrett as he served as the Pirates' infield coach, hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator from 2005-09.
# The Spartans opened the season 4-0 for the second-straight season before falling to Dayton twice Feb. 24. Last year, UNCG ran off seven-straight victories to begin the campaign before losing to Radford.
# UNCG opens the 2013 season playing 19 of its first 21 games at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans will venture to East Carolina March 5 before traveling to Raleigh to face NC State March 19. In all, the Blue and Gold hosts 36 games during the year.
# An early look at the Southern Conference statistics finds the Spartans first in the league in batting with a .307 team average and tied for second in pitching as the UNCG staff sports a 3.07 ERA. Individually, Moye is fourth in batting average (.429) while senior infielder Christian Wolfe sits tied for seventh in hits (17). On the pitching side, Gilliam is second in opposing batting average (.155) and third in ERA (0.52).
# The Spartans have showed well at the plate early in the season, scoring 66 runs (7.3 r/g), racking up 97 hits and batting .307 as a team. The Blue and Gold has four hitters batting over .300 and the offense has produced 32 extra base hits. UNCG is also second in the SoCon in triples with five.
# Senior infielder Trevor Edwards increased his career home run total to 28 with two home runs this past week. He is the Southern Conference active career leader in round-trippers and RBI while also placing inside the top five in slugging percentage and doubles.
# The Spartans return home this weekend, hosting Marist in a nonconference series at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Blue and Gold owns a 3-0 all-time record against the Red Foxes.
