Leach, Hathcock Named 2013 Baseball Team Captains
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior outfielder Zach Leach and junior left-handed pitcher Dylan Hathcock have been named team captains for the 2013 campaign, according to an announcement Thursday by head coach Link Jarrett.
"Zach and Dylan exemplify all that is good in student-athletes in the classroom, on the field and in the community," Jarrett said. "Our players and coaches all value their qualities and we are fortunate to have them as our 2013 captains."
Leach appeared in 48 games for UNCG last season, making 38 starts in left field. He posted a team second-best .315 batting average with 52 hits in 165 at bats and scored 29 runs while also tallying eight doubles, four triples and a pair of home runs. Leach put together a team season-long 18-game hitting streak from March 28 to April 28 in addition to producing 15 multiple-hit and three multiple-RBI efforts.
The then junior delivered a season-best three hits in the win over North Carolina A&T at NewBridge Bank Park and clubbed a pair of home runs on the way to a career-high six RBI in a 13-1 sweep-clinching win over Delaware State at the UNCG Baseball Stadium Feb. 18. Leach was fairly effective when batting with two outs as he was 15-for-46 with 14 RBI. He also hit .317 with runners in scoring position (19-for-60).
Hathcock appeared in 21 games during the 2012 season, throwing 59.2 innings with 32 strikeouts and compiling a team-best 3.32 ERA. He put together a 4-4 record and flirted with a complete game against Davidson, pitching 7.2 innings and earning the win while striking out a career-high seven batters.
The Tampa, Fla., native secured a victory in three of four games in which he threw at least five innings and posted saves in contests at Western Carolina (3/25) and against Presbyterian (4/7).
The Spartans open the 2013 season Friday, Feb. 15, welcoming Army to the UNCG Baseball Stadium for a three-game series.
