GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG infielder Kris Richards has signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Orioles, the organization announced today.
Richards, who exhausted his eligibility this past season, will report to Sarasota, Florida to play for either the GCL Orioles, the rookie-level affiliate for the Orioles, or for the Aberdeen Ironbirds in the Short-season league.
"I am really excited for this opportunity and all I wanted was to get my foot in the door with a Major League team," Richards said. "I am going to work hard and try to make the most of this opportunity chasing my dream. I am blessed and honored to continue my playing career with the Orioles organization."
The Garner, N.C., native saved his best for last as he put up career numbers during his senior campaign in the 2012 season as he led the team with a .342 batting average and enjoyed an 11-game hitting streak. Richards started all but two contests for the Spartans and led the team with 34 runs scored, 63 hits and 15 doubles. He ranked second on the team with 93 total bases, five home runs, eight stolen bases, 10 sacrifice bunts and an impressive .505 slugging percentage. The senior finished tied for third on the team with 28 RBI and had a team-high 18 multi-hit games.
