UNCG plays spoiler in slugfest with Appalachian State, 10-8
BOONE, N.C. – UNCG's Lloyd Enzor and Zach Leach went a combined 4-for-7 with six RBI in a slugfest that UNCG won, 10-8, to ruin Appalachian State's Senior Day and to avoid a sweep on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action at Smith Stadium.
Trailing 7-1 after four innings, UNCG's (22-23, 7-17 SoCon) offense exploded and outscored the Mountaineers 9-1 over the final five innings of the game.
Appalachian State (34-11, 18-6 SoCon) couldn't have picked a worse time to lose only its second game at home on the season as it honored 14 seniors prior to the contest. College of Charleston was the only other team to defeat the Mountaineers at Smith Stadium in the 2012 campaign.
The Spartans wasted no time in scoring as Kris Richards singled and advanced to second on a throwing error and to set the table for Leach in the first inning. Leach didn't disappoint as he collected one of his four RBI on the afternoon by scorching a single up the middle to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineer offense didn't lose any steam overnight as it plated four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Daniel Kassouf continued to pester the Spartan pitching staff as he tied the game at 1 with an RBI single to left. Two batters later, Jeremy Dowdy delivered a big blow as he connected on a three-run home run that sailed over the left field fence to make it a 4-1 game.
Appalachian State didn't slow down as it tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to extend its lead to five, 6-1. This time, Will Callaway got in on the action as he smoked a two-run double down the right field line.
The Mountaineers would plate another run in the bottom of the fourth as Callaway collected his third RBI of the game with a single to make it a 7-1 game.
However, UNCG would plate three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take its first lead of the series, 8-7. In the fifth, Leach crushed his second triple of the series, which plated two runs. The next batter, Enzor, gathered an RBI after singling up the middle to score Leach.
In the sixth, the Spartans would bat around and score four runs on only two hits. TJ Spina and Bobby Martin collected RBI via bases-loaded walks. Richards chipped in an RBI thanks to a fielder's choice. Leach followed suit with an RBI groundout that allowed Richards to score.
Appalachian State would not go down easily as the SoCon leaders plated a run in the bottom of the seventh as Trey Holmes drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game again, this time at 8 apiece. With the bases loaded and one out, the Spartans' Jonathan Jones did a great job of damage control as he retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Once again, UNCG responded as Enzor hit a go-ahead RBI triple and senior Thomas Troelstrup followed with an RBI single to make it a 10-8 game.
After working magic in the first two games of the series, it looked as if the Mountaineers were going to do it again as Tyler Tewell led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. But, Jones buckled down and induced a 4-6-3 double play. Holmes made it interesting as he hit a two-out double and to bring the tying run to the plate. Jones got Preston Troutman to fly out to end the threat and the game.
The game saw 12 pitchers used, but only six strikeouts. The teams combined for 23 hits, 18 runs, three double plays and 19 runners stranded.
Jones (1-0) picked up the win as he gutted out 2 2/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball on 44 pitches. Saturday's winner, Tyler Moore (3-2), took the loss on Sunday as he allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Six Spartans gathered at least one RBI and Leach, Enzor and Cambric Moye enjoyed multi-hit performances. Over the weekend, Moye saw his batting average go from .237 to .274.
Tewell paced the Mountaineer offense as he went 3-for-5 and Callaway and Dowdy both had a trio of RBI.
The win snapped UNCG's five-game losing streak, which was tied for a season high. Coming into Sunday's action, UNCG trailed Furman by two games for the eighth seed and final spot for a ticket to the Southern Conference tournament in Greenville, S.C.
UNCG returns to action when it looks for the season sweep of the Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
