Spartans down Team USA in baseball exhibition, 7-2

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Thomas Troelstrup was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI to lead UNCG to a 7-2 win over USA Baseball's 18u National Training team, Friday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

USA Baseball is in the midst of a four-game exhibition series. The team consists almost exclusively of high school seniors. They play at UNC Wilimgton on Saturday.

Troelstrup put the Spartans on the board with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. The Spartans increased their lead to 6-0 with four runs in the bottom of the third. Three runs scored when left fielder David Dahl dropped a deep fly ball with the bases loaded, allowing all three runners to score.

USA Baseball scored in the top of the fourth to cut UNCG's lead to 6-1 but the Spartans added a run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead. Team USA added its final run on a fielder's choice ground out by Mikey White in the seventh.

Team USA's Cole Irvin allowed six runs (three earned) on two hits while walking five and striking out one. Irvin was one of four pitchers for the red, white and blue.

UNCG sent Tyler Hollstegge, Adam Boghosian, Max Povse, Lee Gilliam, Dominique Vattuone and Zach Furl to the mound. Hollstegge struck out three in two inning and Povse struck out three batters in two innings of work. Vattuone and Furl each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Christian Wolfe joined Troelstrup with a multi-hit effort for UNCG, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Joe Hager and Nick Chapman had the other hits for the Spartans.
